Chapter Ten

Two was lucky he was dead. Otherwise, Ryker would’ve killed him. Which would have been bad for morale. Whenever he killed someone from his own team the others invariably considered going AWOL.

According to the others, John Lowry had fired the fatal shot.

Ironic.

Bet Two thought Lowry was a problem now as he burned in hell.

More men dead and another dead end. They’d learned of Zee’s Zoey Howard alias. But by the time they’d connected it to the prescription filled for sertraline, they’d gotten to the pharmacy too late.

“Did you pick up anything on CCTV that might indicate where the target is?” Ryker asked, taking off his leather coat and tossing it on a chair in the room at the Rainier Inn on the Lewis-McChord joint base.

“The analyst at Langley lost them once they exited I-90. Couldn’t find anything useful after that. If they’re holed up in a hotel somewhere, they must be using cash or fake IDs.”

Damn it. He’d been so close to getting his hands on his daughter and putting a bullet in Zee he’d tasted victory in his mouth. Now they were in the wind. With Lowry.

The former SEAL had thrown his arms around Ryker’s child and his woman. Deep down, he would always think of Zenobia as his, though he’d preferred her young, naive and easy to keep under his thumb. The image of Lowry ushering them out the doors of the academy, facilitating their escape, filled his mind. Dominated everything.

A slow-burning fury coursed in Ryker’s veins. But he had to be careful. When it came to Zee, he often let his rage and lust cloud his thinking.

All he had to do was keep his head clear and use the resources at his disposal. Then he’d find her and his daughter. Lowry, too. “We need to extract all the data on her laptop and have it analyzed.”

“Seven started the process,” Fifteen said, “but he didn’t get a chance to finish because we pinpointed the location of the girl and dropped everything to get to her first.”

Little good it had done them. If only he had wounded Zee or Lowry at the very least, then it might have been worth the sacrifice of manpower.

Now Seven was dead, too. Killed by the police at the academy. His men were dropping like flies. Given enough time, they could be replaced with more hired guns from the contracted security firm, but the clock was ticking and the loss of his one techie hurt.

“This isn’t my specialty, sir, but I’m doing my best.” Fifteen clacked away at the keyboard.

“Unfortunately, your best isn’t good enough,” Ryker said, stating a fact. “Contact our Langley analyst and give them whatever information they need to patch into this laptop and take control of it. They can do the extraction remotely.” An expert touch was required to handle this. “I want to know precisely what Zenobia was interested in and looking at besides my daughter. She didn’t breach the CIA database for nothing. If she found anything valuable, she’d do something with the information.
